Kaeng Krachan Dam and Reservoir

เขื่อนแก่งกระจาน · Also: Kaeng Krachan Reservoir, Kaeng Krachan Lake

Part of Kaeng Krachan National Park

An earth dam across the Phetchaburi River, finished in 1966, holding back a 45 km² lake dotted with islands, where you can take a longtail boat, fish, or watch the sun set behind the Tenasserim hills.

Kaeng Krachan Dam is an earth dam across the Phetchaburi River between Khao Chao and Khao Mai Ruak in Tambon Kaeng Krachan. The crest is 760 m long, 8 m wide and 58 m high, and it was completed in 1966. The water behind it forms a freshwater lake of about 45 km², which is part of Kaeng Krachan National Park.

Some 30 to 40 islands dot the lake. Most visitors take a longtail boat out on the water, with the fare depending on how far you go; boats can also be hired for freshwater fishing. In the evening the lake is a sunset spot, with the Tenasserim range behind it.

The dam has a 19,000 kW hydropower plant and supplies irrigation water to the Phetchaburi plain. Boats are hired from the restaurants or the boat club near the park headquarters; ask Kaeng Krachan National Park for more details.

Getting there

53 km from Phetchaburi town and about 3 km from Kaeng Krachan National Park headquarters, on the same road. Sightseeing and fishing boats can be hired from the restaurants or boat club near the park headquarters.
