Khao Daen Recreational Forest

ป่านันทนาการเขาแด่น · Also: Khao Daen, Khao Dan

A forested hill rising from the plain about 16 km from Phetchaburi town, with open rock and cliff-top clearings for camping, sunrise and sunset views and paragliding; run by the Royal Forest Department as a recreational forest, free to enter.

Khao Daen lies in the Pa Yang Hak–Khao Pum National Reserved Forest, which spans several subdistricts of Ban Lat and part of Nong Ya Plong district. The Royal Forest Department manages it as a recreational forest. The hills rise 200–500 metres above sea level and are covered in dry dipterocarp and mixed deciduous forest, ringed by well-kept community forests.

Parts of the area were once mined, leaving open clearings on the cliffs that are good for camping, views, sunrise and sunset. Because the summit stands alone above the plain it catches the wind from every side, and some of the rock clearings are used as launch sites for paragliders and paramotors. Visitors also come for hiking, trail running and off-road driving.

Wildlife in the forest includes serow, barking deer, stump-tailed macaques, langurs, red junglefowl and many kinds of birds.

Open daily 08:30–16:30, with no entry fee at present. There is parking and a camping ground. The recreational forest office is in Huai Khong subdistrict; the head of the forest can be reached on 098-268-9855.
