Part of Kaeng Krachan National Park

A ridge-top viewpoint in Kaeng Krachan National Park known for its morning sea of mist; camp overnight in montane forest and watch the clouds fill the valleys at dawn.

Khao Phanoen Thung is the highest point of Kaeng Krachan National Park on the Thai side, at about 1,207 m above sea level and about 50 km from park headquarters. Its slopes carry wide grassland at around 960 m, ringed by montane forest rich in wildlife.

The main viewpoint is at the Phanoen Thung campsite (km 30), with another at km 36. On clear mornings a sea of mist fills the valleys all around. Visitors also walk the nature trails and watch birds and butterflies.

Only tent camping is allowed on the mountain, and the park rents out tents. In the 2024 season the campsite took about 150 people a night, with no online booking: ask for a camping permit at park headquarters or the Sam Yot checkpoint. There are toilets, showers and a park shop; mobile signal is limited to some networks.

Only capable 4WD vehicles may drive up, in time slots set by the park. The area closes every year from 1 August to 31 October.

When to go

Closed every year from 1 August to 31 October, reopening on 1 November. The sea of mist can appear almost year-round but is thickest from the end of the rains into the cool season.

Getting there

About 50 km from park headquarters. Register at the visitor centre or the Khao Sam Yot checkpoint. Only capable 4WD vehicles are allowed, in set time slots (2025 season: up 05:30–07:30 and 13:00–15:00, down 09:00–10:00 and 16:00–17:00). Without a suitable car, ask the visitor centre about hiring a pickup.
