- late Ayutthaya period
- Highlights
- Stucco work
Wat Phai Lom was built in the late Ayutthaya period in the old-town area of Tha Rap. Its main historic structures are the ordination hall, the Buddha niches and a group of ornate small chedis.
The brick-and-stucco ordination hall is split in two by a dividing wall: the front part houses the Buddha images and the back part is an empty room.
The gable of the dividing wall bears a stucco relief of Narai riding Garuda, and below it the whole wall is covered in stucco. At the top is a Buddha footprint, thought to depict the footprint on Mount Sumanakuta in Lanka; the rest shows Buddha images, human figures and models of buildings, forming a continuous narrative relief said to be the only one of its kind in Thailand.
