Tham Bo

ถ้ำโบ้

A hilltop cave above Wat Khiri Wong in Khao Yoi, reached only on foot, where a huge chamber opens right through the mountain onto rice fields below; a finalist in TAT's Unseen New Chapters in 2023.

Tham Bo is a cave that passes right through the hill above Wat Khiri Wong, in Ban Khiri Wong, Nong Chumphon Nuea subdistrict, Khao Yoi district. You can only get there on foot. At the top is a huge chamber with an opening through to the other side of the hill, looking down over rice fields, which turn bright green in the rainy season and make an unusual photo framed by the rock.

Around 1932 Chinese settlers made their homes at the western foot of the hill, so locals called it Phukhao Chin, "Chinese mountain", and named the big cave on its western side, which opens through to the back, Tham Bo. In 1947 villagers built a temple called Wat Tham Bo; it was renamed Wat Khiri Wong in 1955, which gave the village its present name.

In 2023 Tham Bo was one of 25 finalists in the Tourism Authority of Thailand's Unseen New Chapters. Open daily 09:00–17:00; phone 08 5113 3237.
