The royal chronicles record that King Sanphet VIII (Phra Chao Suea) came to fish in the sea during the late Ayutthaya period and stayed at Wat Khung Tamnak. The temple also appears in Sunthorn Phu’s poem Nirat Mueang Phet, though no trace of the royal lodge remains today.

According to the National Office of Buddhism, the temple was founded in 1898 and received its royal grant of consecrated land (wisungkhamsima) in 1923. It lies in a Mon community that migrated from Hongsawadi in the early Rattanakosin period, in the reign of King Phutthaloetla Naphalai.

The old ordination hall, thought to date from the late Ayutthaya period, is built entirely of teak and houses a principal Buddha image made of thonglang wood. The temple also has a chedi in the style of the Shwedagon Pagoda.
