Wat Bunthawi stands at the southern foot of Khao Luang. Founded in 1872, it was first called Wat Tham Klaep after the cave beside it, and was renamed Wat Bunthawi in 1935. It is a community temple of the Mahanikai order.
The temple has several caves, including Tham Klaep, Tham Phra Phuttha Saiyat and Tham Biao. Tham Klaep holds a number of Buddha images among natural stalactites, stalagmites and vines, and the temple also has a 10.10 m reclining Buddha.
Local legend says the mouth of Tham Klaep is the entrance to Laplae, a hidden town inhabited only by women. The temple is also a starting and finishing point for visitors climbing Khao Luang.
