Sirindhorn International Environmental Park

An environment and energy learning park inside Camp Rama VI, where degraded mangrove and beach forest have been brought back, with a mangrove boardwalk trail, a bird hide and guided kayak trips.

The park grew out of a 1994 initiative by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn to find land for replanting and restoring mangroves. In 2000 the Border Patrol Police, the Huai Sai Royal Development Study Centre and the Mrigadayavan Palace Foundation set it up inside Camp Rama VI, and in 2010 it received its royal name.

Its natural highlight is the Thun Kramom mangrove garden at the mouths of Khlong Bang Tra Noi and Khlong Bang Tra Yai. Once cleared almost completely, it is now thick with rhizophora, cannonball mangroves, blind-your-eye, sea hibiscus and other species, a nursery for young marine life and home to resident and migratory birds. A wooden boardwalk trail winds through the mangroves, and there is a bird hide.

Guided kayak trips cover 2.5 km of mangrove in 1.5–2 hours and cost 300 baht per two-seat kayak, with up to 16 people per round and life jackets provided. The park also has an Energy for Environment centre with an eight-station exhibition, a restaurant and lodging for learning camps.

Groups should phone ahead to book a date and send a written visit request. Outside food and drink are not allowed without written permission.

When to go

Mangrove kayaking runs from November to March, depending on the tide.

Getting there

Inside Camp Rama VI on Phetkasem Road, about 9 km south of the Cha-am traffic-light junction: turn left through the Camp Rama VI gate, the same entrance as Mrigadayavan Palace.
