Khao Nang Phanthurat Forest Park
วนอุทยานเขานางพันธุรัต · Also: Khao Nang Non
A limestone ridge said to be the sleeping giantess Nang Phanthurat of the Sang Thong legend, now a forest park with a nature trail past caves and story sites and bird's-eye views over Cha-am.
Khao Nang Phanthurat is a limestone ridge running north–south. Seen from the main road it looks like a giantess lying on her back, so locals also call it Khao Nang Non, the “sleeping lady”. In the Sang Thong legend, the giantess Nang Phanthurat died of grief after Phra Sang fled from her, and her body became this mountain.
The Royal Forest Department declared it a forest park on 25 February 1999, covering about 1,562 rai at Ban Khao Mai Nuan in Tambon Khao Yai, following King Bhumibol's wish that the area be conserved. Restoration work has turned the once-dry hills green again.
A nature trail links spots named after the story, including Phra Sang's bathing pool, Hup Wang Ruea, Tham Mayom and Tham Chaeng caves, Nang Phanthurat's pyre and mirror, and Khok Chang. It suits nature lovers and climbers and gives bird's-eye views over Cha-am and the surroundings.
There is an information pavilion, a visitor centre, a camping ground, parking and toilets. There are no bungalows: to stay overnight, bring your own tent and ask the staff for permission. The Khrua Sang Thong restaurant serves food, and entry is free.
