Hat Chao Samran

หาดเจ้าสำราญ · Also: Chao Samran Beach

Phetchaburi's long-established beach, about 15 km from town: quiet, fine for a swim and lined with restaurants and resorts, with a history that goes back to King Naresuan and King Vajiravudh (Rama VI).

Hat Chao Samran is in Hat Chao Samran subdistrict, about 15 km from Phetchaburi town, and has drawn visitors since early times. The story goes that King Naresuan came here with his brother King Ekathotsarot, liked the beach so much that he stayed several nights, and the villagers named it Hat Chao Samran, "the beach where the king was content".

The beach was at its height under King Vajiravudh (Rama VI), who had a royal camp, Khai Luang Bang Thalu, and a seaside residence built here, before the royal residence moved to what is now Mrigadayavan Palace.

Today the shore is lined with restaurants and resorts, but it is still quiet and uncrowded, and you can swim. Look out for hermit crabs, shells and jellyfish. The sand at the near end of the beach is very fine because it keeps building up there. A fishing village lies close by, and Hat Puek Tian is about 7 km to the south.
